The Manager, Merchandising Training & Development is responsible for establishing and sustaining an organizational effectiveness function by building practices, programs and tools to accelerate associate development and team effectiveness in the merchandising area. This leader will be working collaboratively with the merchandising organization to create and implement leadership/team development programs that support the organization’s learning and development of our merchandising associates and leaders.

  • Partner with the HR and merchandising leaders to set priorities for the organizational effectiveness and leadership development initiatives that are aligned with the merchandising organization’s talent plans and bench strengthening priorities.

  • Interpret results from skill gap analyses and translate findings into key insights and learning points.

  • Design, implement, and drive issue resolution of organizational effectiveness (“OE”) and talent management strategies and plans, including tools/processes/training for team and leadership development, team assimilation, coaching programs, 360 feedback, mentoring programs, organization design, and career paths to support merchandising’s business goals.

  • Structure and assist in creation of department specific learning modules to increase capabilities of the workforce.

  • Identify and use tools to analyze individual and group behavior, and recommend strategies for making needed and sustained changes; ensure alignment of strategies with competencies and job profiles.

  • Influence and support changes in organizational behavior; serve as an internal consultant to facilitate team building, expand leadership and change management competencies for merchandising.

  • Coach leadership at multiple levels of the merchandising organization to expand leadership and change management competencies as requested.

  • Act as internal consultant to the learning organization and merchant colleagues to solve problems, facilitate organizational development projects and to design, implement and evaluate leadership development programs.

  • Lead efforts for the merchandising team’s effectiveness, individual coaching, and leadership development in the area of training and development.

  • Assess, direct, develop, and deliver corporate training curriculums including employee and leadership development, new hire orientation and compliance training (e.g., sexual harassment, employee discipline/termination, etc.).

  • Provide expertise in and continuously improve competency-based leadership development strategy and program for current, emerging and high-potential leaders; align the program with the leadership competency model to ensure the ability to meet future leadership needs and the establishment of high performing teams.

  • Partner with HR Business Partner to actively support the merchant business leaders in the development and updating of written individual development plans that are actionable and measurable.

  • Partner with compensation’s job description process to ensure alignment of job descriptions with competency requirements and career paths for merchandising.

  • Develop appropriate metrics and tracking mechanisms to build accountability, measure results and optimize the impact of the training department.

  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

  • Bachelor’s degree in training/organization development, industrial/organizational psychology, human resources, education, or related field; or equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

  • Seven (7) years professional level experience in organizational development or instructional design.

  • Experience in designing career paths and leadership competency based success profiles.

  • Demonstrated ability to identify and use individual and group behavior assessment tools.

  • Demonstrated experience and results in designing and delivering organizational and leadership solutions for executive, VP, and director levels.

  • Demonstrated knowledge and application of instructional design and organizational development theory, philosophy and methods including organizational analysis.

  • Demonstrated ability to build strong, trusted relationships with peers, executives and clients.

  • Demonstrated advanced PC skills including proficiency with the primary Microsoft Office applications (Microsoft Windows, Word, Excel, etc.).

  • Experience working with various merchandising technologies including Oracle.

  • Understanding of methodology behind negotiating costs and delivery of product in a retail environment.

  • Understanding of merchandising pricing and markdown process.

  • Previous Buyer and/or Planner experience in a retail environment.
